The Kanlaon Volcano on the island of Negros in the Philippines, erupted on Thursday, sending plumes of ash into the air.

Peak fountain heights were at 1,300 ft. for the south vent and 1,000 ft. for the north vent, with the plume reaching 35,000 ft. Approximately 15 million cubic yards of lava covered about 50% of the Halema’uma’u crater floor.

Volunteers agreed to help remove tephra from the roofs, gutters, and water catchment systems of more than 60 homes, which is the number Civil Defense identified as needing immediate assistance. However, Team Rubicon was only able to clear 23 homes in the Volcano area.

BACOLOD CITY—Sixty families were evacuated after Kanlaon Volcano erupted moderately for two minutes on Thursday afternoon, sending ashfall and a sulfuric odor across 50 barangays in nine local government units in Negros Occidental.

HAWAII — The Kīlauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island stopped erupting on Sunday after flowing for almost 10 hours. At its highest, the fountain of lava soared 1,300 feet in the air from the south vent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The plume of smoke reached an altitude of around 35,000 feet.

Visual observations have been a backbone of volcano research more than 2,000 years and remain fundamental to understanding how volcanoes work. Technological advancements — such as livestreaming cameras — even now allow eruptions to be viewed from around the world.

Episode 42 ended after 9 hours and 48 minutes with both the north and south vents active for most of the eruption. The highest peak or instantaneous effusion rate of 1000 cubic yards per second occurred around 3 p.m. on Feb. 15. An estimated 15 million cubic yards of lava erupted and covered about 50% of Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Scientists in Mexico documented a number of changes inside El Chichón during monitoring between June and December 2025.

“We demonstrate that in the past, the eruption of large volcanic eruptions situated near the equator caused a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation that led to abrupt climate change on a time frame of thousands of years,” said Dr. Vettoretti.
